Lookie what she made: Journal with antique sewing machine graphics

Cathie Holden from Just Something I Made bought this old Singer sewing machine for $5. While the machine clearly is no longer working, she was still able to use it to make a project. Not by sewing with it, but by taking photos of the decals on the machine and cleaning them up on her computer. She used them to make a gorgeous journal cover, and offers the graphics on her website for you to use in your own projects. See what she made and download the graphics.

If you love sewing felt food and softies, then you’ll love Jen’s patterns at GulfCoastCottagePDF. (I know I do!) Her shop features a robust line of felt food playsets like tea sets, barbeque sets, and baking sets. She also has patterns for nonfood-related playsets (like a doctor set) and softies she calls “felt friends”. I don’t think there’s anything she can’t make out of felt!

Tutorial: Bunny and fox flip doll

Laura from We Wilsons designed this clever bunny and fox flip doll. Each doll has both a bunny AND a fox – two dolls in one! You can change which doll you see by flipping and turning the body. (Pictured are actually two dolls sitting side by side.) The pattern will be available for sale in her Etsy shop, but she’s giving away the first 300 downloads for free. Go to the free download.

Limited time only: Free access to vintage pattern database

If you love vintage patterns, then get over to the Commercial Pattern Archive (CoPA) at the Univeristy of Rhode Island. They are allowing free access to their database of vintage patterns until Tuesday, September 25, 2009. To get free access, use “guest” as the username and “pattern” as the password. Go the to Commercial Pattern Archive (CoPA).

(As of Saturday night, I could not log into the database. I don’t know if it’s an error on my part, or if there is a technical glitch on their side. In spite of this, I’m going ahead and posting the now because the clock is ticking. Hopefully you will have better luck than I in accessing the database.)

I love the classic styling of Oliver + S patterns for children, so I was excited to find out that they are offering their Popover Sundress as a free download. This pattern appeared in Issue 6 of Sew Hip magazine. This is a simple pattern, a fast sew for experienced sewists and a great project for beginners. Go to the download.

Free garment patterns for medical care

Recently, my grandmother fell and broke her arm. Given that she’s nearly 94 years old, it is incredibly lucky that she did not hurt herself worse than she did. However, the broken arm did present a considerable clothing challenge. With her arm immobilized in a sling, it was difficult for her to get dressed and undressed.

If this situation sounds familiar, check out Wild Ginger’s FREE iCare download. According to Wild Ginger, “The purpose of the iCare sewing patterns program is to provide custom-sized sewing patterns for hospital gowns, pajamas, and accessories for medical care. This program is provided free of charge to anyone who wishes to sew garments for non-profit and charitable purposes.”

NOTE: I have just downloaded the software myself but have not tried it out yet.
