Review and Giveaway: Cloth by Cassandra Ellis

The winner of this giveaway is commenter #9, Gwen, who said her favorite fabric to work is:   ”I think it would be silk, or maybe linen. It really depends on what I’m using it for.”

Review and Giveaway: Cloth by Cassandra Ellis

Cloth by Cassandra Ellis includes more than 30 projects you can sew from linen, cotton, silk, wool, and hide.  But it’s more than just a book of projects.  Cloth also explores and celebrates the beauty of natural fabrics.

The book is divided into five main sections, each one focused on a different natural fiber:  linen, cotton, silk, wool, and hide.  Within each section, she gives a history of the fabric type, delves into the production, and explores the common uses of the fabric.  She also looks at the types of fabric that are made from the fiber.

Each section also gives instructions to make a handful of projects that feature the fiber.  The projects are all relatively simple, putting the spotlight on the natural features of the fabric rather than on complicated seaming or embellishment.

Some examples of the projects you can find in this book are this metallic leather sling bag

and this wool overnight bag.

An envelope on the back cover includes any patterns needed to make the projects.  The patterns are printed at full size and are ready to go.

Also of note is the information in the introduction on dying fabrics, along with a list of natural dyes you can find around the house or garden.

Cloth is thoughtfully written and beautifully photographed.  This would be a hard book to keep stashed in your studio.  It could just as easily own a space on your coffee table, where you could share with your guests your affection for textiles.

My favourite would have to be cotton. I’m an embroiderer and it’s the perfect surface to stitch on. This giveaway book looks fabulous and thank you for the chance to win it.

I think it would be silk, or maybe linen. It really depends on what I’m using it for.

I would have to say burlap. It’s so versatile; from tote bags to table runners to…..?

  5. MPaula says

I have hardly ever used linen, wool and leather. I have never sewn with silk although I have been collecting bits and pieces and looking forward to a suitable project. Cotton I have used often for both quilting and clothing and it is my favourite natural fabric.

Linen!! I love the feel of it, I love it for garments, I love it for home décor and crafts. Zakka style has given me even more reason to hoard stacks and colors of it!

My favorite fabric would have to be cotton. So soft, easy to care for, versatile and it has a lovely drape.

  11. Laura Mackenzie-Hawkins says

I do love all Natural fibres tho I think for the huge variations that it can be used for it has to be wool. Whether it is woven into Tweed, Spun into knitting wool or used in Felting, but also it’s use as insulation in everything from quilts to housing.
We need to support our British Sheep Farmers as they really struggle to make a living from a hard but wonderful way of life.

Hi, I love sewing leather. It last forever and it is not as hard to work with as most sewers think it is. I have used leather in a quilt for one of my grandsons. Thanks for this wonderful giveaway.

There is only a cat’s whisker between cotton and linen. My only no no on linen being how easily it crushes.

  16. Teresa says

For sewing, at least so far, it’s cotton . . . but that is probably because I’m really just beginning to sew again after about 30+ years of not sewing.

  17. Elizabeth says

I would love to make some clothes out of linen for Spring and Summer. I would also love to learn how to sew with leather, especially bags and purses. Thanks for the opportunity to win this Beautiful Book!!!
