The winner of this giveaway is commenter #9, Gwen, who said her favorite fabric to work is: ”I think it would be silk, or maybe linen. It really depends on what I’m using it for.”
Cloth by Cassandra Ellis includes more than 30 projects you can sew from linen, cotton, silk, wool, and hide. But it’s more than just a book of projects. Cloth also explores and celebrates the beauty of natural fabrics.
The book is divided into five main sections, each one focused on a different natural fiber: linen, cotton, silk, wool, and hide. Within each section, she gives a history of the fabric type, delves into the production, and explores the common uses of the fabric. She also looks at the types of fabric that are made from the fiber.
Each section also gives instructions to make a handful of projects that feature the fiber. The projects are all relatively simple, putting the spotlight on the natural features of the fabric rather than on complicated seaming or embellishment.
Some examples of the projects you can find in this book are this metallic leather sling bag
this kimono silk quilt,
and this wool overnight bag.
An envelope on the back cover includes any patterns needed to make the projects. The patterns are printed at full size and are ready to go.
Also of note is the information in the introduction on dying fabrics, along with a list of natural dyes you can find around the house or garden.
Cloth is thoughtfully written and beautifully photographed. This would be a hard book to keep stashed in your studio. It could just as easily own a space on your coffee table, where you could share with your guests your affection for textiles.
STC Craft has a copy of the book to give away to a lucky Craft Gossip reader. To enter, leave a comment here telling me your favorite natural fabric. I’ll choose one comment at random as the winner.
This giveaway is open to United States and Canada residents only.
Deadline for entry is 11:59 pm CST on Tuesday, April 8, 2014.
