This review is part of the blog tour for The Magic Pattern Book by Amy Barickman. Be sure to read all the way through to the end, because I’ve got a copy of this book to give away! Tomorrow the blog tour is at Sew Mama Sew so be sure to check that out, too.
Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book so I could review it for Craft Gossip. All opinions in this post are my own.
When I first started sewing, I raced out to every 99-cent pattern sale and loaded up on pattern after pattern after pattern. Guess what? 10 years later, most of those patterns are still sitting in their envelopes – uncut, unused.
Since then, I’ve learned that you can do far more with just a few well-thought patterns. Today I would rather have one good basic bodice pattern, than 50 individual patterns each only slightly different than the other.
If you’re wondering why the change of heart, consider this. No pattern comes out of the envelope fitting you perfectly. For a good fit, you’ll have to make small adjustments here and there. If you’re sewing a brand new pattern with each garment you make, you’re going through that fine tuning process with every single project. BUT, getting really good at sewing one basic pattern means that the next time you sew that pattern, you’ll already know what adjustments to make. You’ll also be more familiar with the basic construction process on subsequent sews.
This is what The Magic Pattern Book does. Amy Barickman, founder of Indygo Junction, has created 6 basic patterns, each with 6 distinct variations. That’s 36 patterns in one book! At $22.95 list price, that’s actually a better deal than those 99-cent patterns, but with consistency in construction and fit.
Once you’ve sewn one pattern in a group, you’ll know the basic process and adjustments for the others in the group. (Obviously, the construction will be slightly different for each variation, but you’ll still be familiar with most of the steps in the process.)
Magic Patterns in this book include:
The Tank Top – Loose fitting tank. Variations include a handkerchief hem, racer back, ruffle front, braided cross back straps, shift dress, and a ruffle hem dress.
The Skirt – Elastic waist A-line skirt. Variations include an inverted front pleat, pleated hem detail, pencil wrap, bias cut, maxi length, and a shorter length with vertical ruffle.
The Dress – Raglan sleeve dress. Variations include beltedwith ¾ curved hem sleeves, maxi length, a blouse length with front ruffles, halter neck, short sleeved blouse length, ¾ ruffle hem sleeves.
The Cardigan – Layering cardigan. Variations include a curved hem and open front, a short boxy cardi, flared sleeves and belted waist, long cut and tie front, a button front vest, and a collared jacket with side pockets.
The Coat – Swing coat with Mandarin collar. Variations include belted with patch pockets, toggle closure with sleeves gathered at the cuff, wide collar boxy jacket with side ties, flared sleeve and in seam pockets, a cape, and a hip length jacket with contrasting left front.
The Accessory – This section includes patterns for a newsboy style hat, a t-shirt leaf scarf, a beret, a sunhat, a tote, and a drawstring purse.
Patterns come in women’s sizes S to XXL.
All patterns are available on a CD in in the back of the book. You’ll need to print and assemble them just like you would any other PDF pattern. There are individual PDFs for each variation, as well as one large PDF that has all of the pieces for all of the variations in a group.
I’ve got a copy of The Magic Pattern Book to give away to one of our readers. To enter the giveaway, leave a comment on this post telling me what type of garment you like to make. I’ll choose one comment at random as the winner.
Giveaway ends at midnight CST on Thursday, October 16, 2014.
