Usually when you join two pieces of fabric, you layer one piece on top of another and then sew them together. But when you flatlock, the two pieces of fabric are butted up next to each other, with stitches going across to connect them. Because there are no extra layers, the finish is nice and flat. Raw edges are all contained within the stitch. Irene from Serger Pepper shows how you can make a flatlocked seam on a home serger.
