1341-Pleated_Runner-1Sew4Home shows how to make a pleated and pieced table runner.  The difference in texture between the plain squares and the pleated squares creates a tone on tone checkerboard design.  It’s beautiful out of the linen they used, but you could also use a solid cotton.  Go to their tutorial.
