A gathering foot makes fast work of gathering up a length of fabric, whether for a long ruffle or to gather a skirt to a bodice. (The first time I heard of a gathering foot was AFTER I had just gathered the dust ruffle on my daughter’s crib with the time consuming baste & pull method. Doh!) You can find a gathering foot for most brands of machines. They’re not expensive or complicated to use. Jess from The Sewing Rabbit shows two ways – using the gathering foot to simply gather a length of fabric, and using the foot to gather the fabric and stitch it down to another fabric all in one fell swoop.
