16 Projects To Sew With A Flannel Shirt

August 2, 2022 by Shellie Wilson

So you might remember that a few months ago we shared a roundup of over 33 Flannel projects  Well this roundup is all about those old Flannel shirts.

Upcycling old flannel shirts into new and useful items is a great way to give them new life and save them from ending up in a landfill. Plus, it can be a fun and creative way to add a personal touch to your home or wardrobe.

One popular way to upcycle flannel shirts is by turning them into a cozy blanket. All you need is an old flannel shirt and a piece of batting or fleece. Cut the flannel shirt into squares or rectangles and sew them together, sandwiching the batting or fleece in between the layers. You can even add a border or trim to give it a finished look.

Another popular project is turning an old flannel shirt into a pillow cover. Simply cut the shirt to the size you want your pillow to be, sew the sides and bottom closed, and then add a zipper or buttons to the back so it can be removed and washed. You can even add a monogram or other embellishments to make it extra special.

Flannel shirts also make great bags and pouches. You can turn an old shirt into a tote bag by cutting off the sleeves and collar, and then sewing up the sides and bottom. You can also make a smaller pouch by cutting a piece of the shirt, adding a zipper, and then using it as a makeup bag or pencil case.

For those who like to accessorize, flannel shirts can be used to make scarves, headbands, and even bow ties. You can also make a flannel shirt into a baby blanket, bib, or burp cloth.

Flannels shirts are also great for use around the house, you can use the sleeves or scraps of fabric to make dish towels or rags for cleaning. Or you can use the scraps of fabric to make rag rugs.

When you’re upcycling flannel shirts, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, make sure that the shirt is clean and free of any stains or holes. You’ll also want to pay attention to the weight of the flannel, since some flannels are thicker than others. It is also important to consider the size of the shirt and how much fabric you’ll need for your project.

Another thing to keep in mind is that flannel can shrink, so it’s important to prewash the fabric before you start your project. This will also help to soften the fabric and make it more comfortable to wear or use.

Overall, upcycling old flannel shirts is a great way to give them new life and save them from ending up in a landfill. With a little bit of creativity and some basic sewing skills, you can turn an old flannel shirt into a cozy blanket, pillow cover, or even a stylish bag or accessory
