9 Ways to Sew a Laptop Sleeve

March 24, 2024 by Anne Weaver

A handmade laptop sleeve is one of those sewing projects that is genuinely useful, which always makes me feel a little more justified about dipping into the fabric stash. Whether you’re protecting a work laptop, a school device, a tablet, or the laptop that lives on the kitchen table between cups of tea and unfinished craft projects, a soft padded sleeve is a practical thing to sew.

These DIY laptop sleeve sewing patterns are a lovely way to make something custom-sized, stylish, and far nicer than the plain black cases most shops seem determined to sell us. You can use quilting cotton, canvas, denim, cork fabric, felt, linen blends, or even upcycled fabric from old jeans or jackets. Add batting, foam stabilizer, fleece, or a quilted lining and you’ve got a protective laptop case that feels sturdy without being bulky.

If you’re new to sewing bags and cases, a laptop sleeve is a great beginner-friendly project because the shapes are usually simple and the results are instantly useful. You’ll practise straight seams, topstitching, closures, lining, padding, and measuring for a snug fit — all without needing to tackle a complicated handbag pattern.

Below you’ll find 9 ways to sew a laptop sleeve, including padded laptop cases, envelope-style sleeves, quilted laptop covers, and simple fabric tech accessories you can personalise with your favourite prints. These easy laptop sleeve sewing tutorials are perfect for handmade gifts, back-to-school sewing, office accessories, or simply making your everyday tech feel a little more “you.”

Scroll through our list to see 9 ways you can sew a laptop sleeve!

DIY Sweater MacBook Case by The Merrythought

Have an old sweater you no longer wear but has a cute design?  You can turn it into a laptop sleeve.  I think a felted wool sweater would work best for this, though you could also use a non-felted sweater if it was thick and didn’t have much stretch to it.

DIY Leather Laptop Sleeve by Rachel Teodoro

This laptop sleeve isn’t sewn from fabric at all.  It’s made from leather (or faux leather).  Pockets across the front will hold your cords and other small accessories.  The closure is a simple cord that wraps around the sleeve several times.

I recently made a quilted laptop case and all of them did not include handles which is what I was specifically looking for. I think a clutch-style could be dropped much easier when transporting it.
