This Pickled Bums Project Is Exactly the Kind of Cheeky Craft We Love

May 5, 2026 by Shellie Wilson

Sometimes a craft project shows up that is polished, practical, and beautifully styled. And then sometimes a project shows up that is completely ridiculous, a little bit nostalgic, and guaranteed to make people laugh. That is exactly where Pickled Bums lands.

This free CraftBits project shows you how to make a jar full of soft sculpted “bums” using stockings or hosiery, toy filling, needle and thread, blush, and a jar. The tutorial also suggests fun variations like turning them into “Smelly Bums” with potpourri or “Beach Bums” with white sand.

What makes this one so memorable is that it fully embraces the old-school gag gift energy. It does not pretend to be serious home decor, and that is part of the charm. It is silly, simple, and the kind of thing that would get passed around at a craft fair, tucked into a bathroom shelf, or handed over at Christmas to the one family member who always appreciates a joke gift. The original tutorial even notes that these were hugely popular at craft fairs years ago, which honestly tracks because it has that vintage novelty-craft feel people still secretly love.

The actual construction is very beginner-friendly too. The project starts with a small square of stocking, which is stitched and gathered around stuffing to form the shape. A few extra stitches create the signature crack detail, and then a dab of powdered blush finishes the look. It is one of those low-cost crafts that does not require fancy supplies or advanced skills, which makes it easy to imagine making a whole batch in one sitting.

What I like most about this project is that it knows exactly what it is. It is not trying to be trendy. It is not trying to be elegant. It is just a gloriously goofy handmade gift idea. And honestly, there is still a place for that. In a world of serious tutorials and polished DIY trends, there is something refreshing about a craft that exists purely to make someone snort-laugh when they open the jar.

This would be especially fun for cheeky gift baskets, novelty market stalls, prank presents, or even just as a conversation starter in a guest bathroom. You could also easily play around with the presentation depending on the recipient. A cleaner white jar look would make it feel more modern, while a rustic tag and twine finish leans into the country craft fair vibe.

Not every craft has to be beautiful to be a success. Sometimes it just has to be funny, memorable, and easy enough that you immediately want to make one for someone who will appreciate the joke. Pickled Bums absolutely delivers on that front.

If your sense of humor leans a little mischievous and you love those retro novelty crafts that never quite disappear, this one is worth a look. It is weird, witty, and surprisingly giftable for the right person.
