Tips for sewing perfect buttonholes

Raise your hand if you’re scared of sewing buttonholes! My hand is partially raised. I’m not scared of them, but I don’t exactly look forward to them, either. If they end up looking wonky, they’re such a pain to rip out. Or, if you’ve already cut the fabric between the stitching, there’s no undoing that.
