Tutorial: Basting by machine and by hand

September 10, 2013 by Anne Weaver

bastingThe Elizabeths (yes, there are two of them) at Simple Simon & Co.  have a post up over at Sew, Mama, Sew! where they talk about basting, both by machine and by hand.  I will admit, that this is one sewing technique that doesn’t see much practice in my studio – especially hand basting.  I think it’s because I don’t like to rip out the stitches later.  Lazy, I know!  But basting does have a purpose, and I should do it more often.  The temporary and quickly sewn stitches will hold your fabrics together so they won’t shift while you put in permanent stitches, and they’ll do it without the puckering that you often get with pins.   Go to Sew, Mama, Sew! to read about how to baste by hand or by machine.

Easy Cosmetics Bag Sewing Pattern

The bag is simple, uses very little fabric (about 2/3rds of a fat quarter), has no fussy inside pockets (although you can add your own if you like), and takes me well less than 30 minutes to print the pattern, cut out and sew. But quick and simple doesn’t mean it’s not awesome!

It’s the sort of bag that is versatile enough to be used for lots of applications, not just cosmetics and toiletries. Keep all your pens and pencils in order, use it for a small first aid kit for the car, keep it in your desk at work for a few headache pills and other personal supplies.

Make some for yourself, for gifts or to sell.
