Sew4Home shares a tutorial for making beginner friendly back-to-school tote, with 2 strap variations.  One has short handles to carry in the hand.  The other has a longer, adjustable straps.  The construction is simple, but they keep details like boxed corners, lining, and a pocket that give it a nice finish.  They show them as back-to-school totes, but I don’t think you need to heading back to school to carry these totes.  I’d totally carry either of these around town just because.
