Gina Michele shows how you can make an oversized color blocked scarf out of several thrifted sweaters. She used cashmere sweaters (yum!) which are actually fairly easy to find at a thrift store, as people will get rid of them if they get a hole. But of course you can cut around the hole for your scarf! Or, you can use acrylic or wool sweaters if you prefer. She leaves the edges of the scarf raw, but if your sweaters are the ravelly type you could use an overcast or overlock stitch to keep the edges from fraying.
