A practical stitch to reinforce a garment can also be decorative! Liesl Gibson from Oliver + S shows how to make a bartack on a sewing machine. Use a contrast thread and make it a triangle, and it becomes a design element. If you have decorative stitches on your machine, you may have one that will work. If not, her tutorial also shows how to make one manually by adjusting your stitching settings.
