Most of the time, hemming is a matter of turning under an edge and stitching it down. But if you want a hem with some fancy shaping – scallops, for example – you’ll need to use a hem facing. The sharp curves and points of a scalloped hem are impossible to just turn under and stitch down smoothly. With a facing, the raw edges get sandwiched between the facing and the garment. You can see how to make a scalloped or faced hem at The Coletterie. Once you see how to make one, you can add a pretty edge to the next skirt you make.
