Tutorial: Sew a Travel chess set with drawstring storage bag

December 6, 2013 by Anne Weaver

chesssetAutumn from It’s Always Autumn shares a tutorial for making a handmade chess set.  She made this one for her son.  The board is pieced from two colors of flannel.  For the pieces, she used craft bottle caps with chess piece symbols transferred on to the tops.  (If you have a Silhouette cutter, I bet you could find a chess piece font and cut the symbols from craft vinyl.)  It can also be a checkers set; just turn the bottle caps upside down and they’re checkers.  When it’s time to put the game away, a drawstring bag will hold the  board and all of the pieces.  Go to It’s Always Autumn to see how to make one.

Easy Cosmetics Bag Sewing Pattern

The bag is simple, uses very little fabric (about 2/3rds of a fat quarter), has no fussy inside pockets (although you can add your own if you like), and takes me well less than 30 minutes to print the pattern, cut out and sew. But quick and simple doesn’t mean it’s not awesome!

It’s the sort of bag that is versatile enough to be used for lots of applications, not just cosmetics and toiletries. Keep all your pens and pencils in order, use it for a small first aid kit for the car, keep it in your desk at work for a few headache pills and other personal supplies.

Make some for yourself, for gifts or to sell.
