Tutorial: Kimono cardi made from a boxy sweater

Tutorial: Kimono cardi made from a boxy sweater

Portia from Makery shows how she revamped this boxy sweater into a kimono cardigan.  The loose fit short sleeved cardi is better for layering than the boxy sweater.  It’s also a great fix for a sweater that has damage.  She sleeves of the sweater she refashioned were damanged, but cutting them off to short sleeves fixed that.

The kimono has been worn in Japan for over a thousand years, dating back to the Heian Period.

So, why is the kimono so fashionable these days? Straight fabric cuts are combined to create a garment that will fit every body type. It is easy to wear and sew.

The excellent first sewing lesson. Kimonos are usually made of lightweight fabrics. Kimono shirts are ideal for layering in the summer.

The ideal beginner sewing lesson. Kimonos are frequently composed of light materials. Looking for more patterns and ideas for making your own Kimono top? Check out all our DIY Kimono Sewing Pattern articles.

Easy Cosmetics Bag Sewing Pattern

The bag is simple, uses very little fabric (about 2/3rds of a fat quarter), has no fussy inside pockets (although you can add your own if you like), and takes me well less than 30 minutes to print the pattern, cut out and sew. But quick and simple doesn’t mean it’s not awesome!

It’s the sort of bag that is versatile enough to be used for lots of applications, not just cosmetics and toiletries. Keep all your pens and pencils in order, use it for a small first aid kit for the car, keep it in your desk at work for a few headache pills and other personal supplies.

Make some for yourself, for gifts or to sell.
