Lisa Lam from U-Handblog shares a tutorial for making a simple tote. It’s the kind of bag you can fold up and stash in a large purse or glove compartment so you’ve always got a bag when you need it. It’s made from canvas and is left unlined, but it does have a small pocket at the top of the inside for keys or other small items, and another pocket at the side to hold a water bottle. The straps are sturdy webbing. The size of the finished bag will depend on the size of the fabric piece you start with. She used .5m and ended up with a tote that measures 14 1/8″ square x 5″ deep (36 x 12.3 cm).
