Thread chains can be quite handy. You can use them to keep two layers of fabric together but loosely to allow for movement (such as a main fabric and a lining). You can also use them to make nearly invisible belt loops for a dress. Jen from Grainline Studio shares a video tutorial showing how you can make thread chains.
