I’m not sure how I made it this far into adulthood before figuring out the joy that is a pair of lightweight, wide legged pants. Light, breezy, and as comfortable as a pair of pajama pants – BUT they look dressy enough to wear to work. When my daughter got her first job, I made sure she had at least one pair in her work wardrobe.
It’s weirdly hard to find a pair of wide legged pants in the stores. Whenever I find them, I snag them up. But of course they’re also easy to sew and then you’re not at the mercy of what colors or styles are trending this season. So skip the shopping and just sew some up for yourself in the fabrics you love. Melissa at Melly Sews has a free sewing pattern you can use. They’re easy to make, and fast too. You can sew a pair in just an afternoon!
These pants have loose fit legs and comfortable elastic waistband so you can move freely in them all day. And did I mention they have pockets?
You can sew wide legged pants from any fabric with a nice drape. A lightweight cotton, rayon challis, even knit fabrics. I also love a double gauze for these pants. A good way to tell how the fabric will work is to unroll a bit off the bolt and hold it up, gathering it up a little in your hand. If it’ looks poofy, it’s not a good choice. But if it hangs smoothly, then it’s a good candidate. Bonus points if it has a little swish to it when you move your hand.
Pants like these are a great wardrobe staple. And I have a feeling once you sew up a pair for yourself, you’ll be hooked.
