Primitive dolls/folk art doll is a broad type of folk art that includes elements of naïve and outsider art. The primitive folk art style is associated with the historical or early Americana era. Primitive crafts are typically rough and unsophisticated in appearance, implying a lack of traditional creative expertise. So the more rustic the better for Primitive crafts. So how do they get their fabric so brown, it is stained to look old as metal embellishments are also rusted to fit into the design of the sewing project? These dolls are also reffered to as grunge dolls.
To make your grunge stain, combine 1/2 cup instant coffee granules, one tablespoon cinnamon, one teaspoon nutmeg, one teaspoon ginger, and one teaspoon vanilla in a small dish with one cup boiling water. Using a sponge paint brush, apply the grunge stain to your cloth or stuffed prim item. Popular clothing for primitive dolls includes dresses and overalls. These can also be stained.
If you are wanting to age safety pins or metal buttons this is my technique – I place the items in bleach overnight, then drain and apply vinegar and 3-4 tbs of salt, leave overnight. Items should be rusty and brown.
Primitive dolls are a great way to use up scrap fabric too, try using upcycled denim and other clothing items.
