I’m a sucker for fat quarters.  For just a few dollars, you can take home a little slice of fabulous designer fabric.  And another, and another, and another, till my basket is filled with these 18″ x 22″ treasures.  But once I get them home, I have a hard time actually turning them into projects.  Sound familiar?

Fat quarters are popular among quilters and fabric enthusiasts as they provide a convenient way to have a variety of different fabrics in smaller, manageable pieces. Fat quarters are typically 18 x 22 inches, which is larger than a standard quarter yard cut, but smaller than a half yard. This allows for a wider range of choices for quilting, patchwork, and other fabric-based projects without having to buy an entire yard of each fabric.

For those who prefer to cut their own fat quarters, it’s a simple process. Start with a metre-square piece of fabric, fold it in half and then in half again to create four quarters. Cut along the folds to create four equal pieces, each measuring approximately 18 x 22 inches. This process allows you to choose the portion of the fabric you want to use, whether it’s a particular section of the design or to simply create a random assortment.

Fat quarters offer a great way to get a variety of fabrics without having to buy an entire yard.
