So why should we try and recycle clothing?  A cotton shirt requires 700 gallons of water to produce. The average American discards around 82 pounds of textile waste every year.

Every year, 92 million tons of textile waste are generated. In the last 20 years, the amount of clothing Americans tosses away has more than doubled. Approximately 85% of all textiles discarded in the United States – approximately 13 million tonnes in 2017 – are either disposed of in landfills or burnt.

According to the US EPA, textile waste accounts for roughly 5% of all landfill area.
