Book Review – 10,000 Crocheted Hats

I love a hat as a quick crochet project! A small project like this is great for trying out a new technique without committing to weeks of working on it. Even better, hats don’t take too much yarn – and people always love getting a handmade crocheted hat as a gift.

10,000 Crocheted Hats by Emma Varnham uses a unique flip page design that allows you to customize your hat crochet pattern. The basic shape of a hat is divided into three parts – the brim (the bottom of the hat, or the cuff), the body, and the crown (the top of the hat). All of the patterns use the same size yarn and hook so you can mix and match to create a combination you love.

The flip pages include full color photographs along with instructions to complete that portion of the hat. The flip photos allow you to easily visualize how the parts will look when put together. And the instructions for all three pieces will be right there together to move seamlessly from one portion of the hat to the other.

I’m the kind of crafter who likes to put my own spin things I make. Usually I just wing it, imagining what something would look like when all the pieces are put together. So being able to see how the patterns would actually look together is a huge plus for me. Honestly, I think it’s fun to just flip the pages around to see what kinds of hats I can come up with. And when I find something I love, the pattern is all there ready for me to make it!

It doesn’t matter whether you sew by hand or by machine, you need a pincushion. You need a spot to parks pins and needles and keep them within easy reach for when you need them again. There are a lot of styles of pincushion to choose from. Some magnetic, some fabric. Some cute, some purely functional.
