Springtime is prom season and that means prom dress shopping. And with that, prom dress hemming. It’s no fun when a dress is too long. That’s not good for walking without tripping, much less dancing! And while hemming pants or skirts is never my favorite sewing project, taking on a hem for a prom dress can be outright intimidating and scary. It’s certainly not a project you want to mess up! And that slippery satin or thin chiffon can be difficult to sew on. Emily from Life Sew Savory has a tutorial showing how to hem a prom dress. Go to her post to see how it’s done, plus get some tips and tricks to make the process go smoothly.
Prom dress fabric can be tricky to work with! For more information about sewing on fancy fabrics, check out this post by Melly Sews. She explains how to sew on various special occasion fabrics, such as silk, satin, taffeta, and other party dress fabrics.
If you haven’t been asked to hem a prom dress yet, I’m betting you’ve been asked to hem a pair of pants at least a dozen times! This tutorial by Sew Can She does a great job explaining how to hem pants. Her tutorial tells how to measure and mark the hem, and then gives instructions for sewing the hem by hand or by machine.
If it’s jeans that need hemming, there’s a super easy way to hem them – AND keep that original folded hem. Go to Hello Sewing for to see how to do it.
