Many young ladies abandoned standard fashion in the late 1960s and early 1970s in favor of more quirky, creative looks. The peasant appearance was one such style: a sort of dress that was an offshoot of the clothes worn by the European lower classes for generations. Long and flowing peasant skirts and dresses were popular. The Peasant Dresses were simple and functional. Women in the lowest strata of society wore shapeless dresses at first.

My mother always made sure we had beautiful handmade dresses to wear during the summer vacations, and basic dresses like this peasant dress pattern and this Jersey knit dress were staples.

  2. Thank you for such an easy tutorial! I love this pattern and it fits my 2.5 year old perfectly. The only alteration I made was to sew a thin strip of elastic inside the dress around the waist line to give it a more fitted effect 🙂

    I do not use patterns and most of my work Is done by Handstitching, I do this because I feel it Brings more of a True Esscence of the Peasant Style!!
