A Quick Handmade Gift For Nurses: DIY Stethoscope Cover Sewing Tutorial

December 5, 2011 by Anne Weaver

There are some handmade gifts that are pretty, and then there are handmade gifts that are actually useful — and this little DIY stethoscope cover happily sits in both camps.

This easy sewing project is a lovely idea for nurses, doctors, vet nurses, medical students, aged-care workers, or anyone who spends their working day with a stethoscope around their neck. It uses just a small strip of cotton fabric, a little elastic, and either Velcro or a snap closure, making it a brilliant scrap fabric sewing project if your fabric stash is currently breeding in the cupboard. No judgement here. Mine has its own postcode.

The full step-by-step tutorial is available here: DIY Stethoscope Cover Sewing Tutorial

What I like about this project is that it feels personal without being fussy. You can make it in cheerful novelty fabric, florals, medical-themed cotton, bright colours, or something a little more subtle and professional. It is also quick enough to batch sew, which makes it a handy handmade gift idea for nursing graduates, hospital staff gifts, vet clinics, or care packages.

This DIY stethoscope cover is designed to slip over the tubing of the stethoscope, helping add a soft fabric layer and a little personality. The tutorial uses a simple rectangle of fabric, sewn into a long tube, with elastic at one end and a Velcro or snap fastening at the other. It is the sort of beginner sewing project that looks more impressive than the effort required, which is always my favourite kind of project.

A quick practical note: if this is being made for someone who works in a clinical setting, it is worth checking their workplace hygiene or infection-control rules first. Fabric covers should only be used on the tubing, never over the chest piece or any part that touches a patient, and they should be washed regularly.

This would be especially sweet paired with a handmade scrub cap, badge reel, fabric lanyard, or small zipper pouch. You could even make a few covers in different fabrics so they can be swapped out and washed between uses.

For anyone looking for quick handmade gifts for healthcare workers, easy nurse gift ideas, or beginner-friendly sewing projects using cotton fabric scraps, this stethoscope cover tutorial is a clever one to bookmark.

Staci from Crafty Staci shares a free pattern and tutorial on her blog for making a stethoscope cover.  It’s reversible, so you can get two looks out of the one cover.  It’s a gift that’s both practical and cute.  Here one one tutorial Get the tute from Crafty Staci.
