Secondhand fabric shopping advice from Abby Glassenberg

June 20, 2013 by Anne Weaver

thriftfabricMuch of my ample fabric and notions stash has come from estate sales and thrift stores.  And why not?   You can find some unusual items, and get them for a fraction of the cost of buying them new.  And it’s eco-friendly, too.  But shopping secondhand is a different animal from perusing the bolts at the fabric store.  Abby Glassenberg from While She Naps, and author of Stuffed Animals: From Concept to Construction, gives some advice for where to look and what to look for when fabric shopping at thrift stores and rummage sales.   Go to her post to see what she says.

Ah – my fave thing to find at a thrift shop is some forgotten yet beautiful fabric!

Have you read?

Easy Cosmetics Bag Sewing Pattern

The bag is simple, uses very little fabric (about 2/3rds of a fat quarter), has no fussy inside pockets (although you can add your own if you like), and takes me well less than 30 minutes to print the pattern, cut out and sew. But quick and simple doesn’t mean it’s not awesome!

It’s the sort of bag that is versatile enough to be used for lots of applications, not just cosmetics and toiletries. Keep all your pens and pencils in order, use it for a small first aid kit for the car, keep it in your desk at work for a few headache pills and other personal supplies.

Make some for yourself, for gifts or to sell.
