Sewing Pattern Saturday Review: Cat-Shaped Bag Sewing Pattern

February 7, 2026 by Shellie Wilson

Sewing Pattern Saturday is my weekly excuse to slow things down and shine a light on independent Etsy sewing pattern designers who are creating thoughtful, genuinely sewable projects. Each feature is written as an honest review, not a sales pitch. I look at how the pattern feels to sew, who it’s really suited for, and whether the finished project is something you’ll actually use. It’s also one small way to support small creative businesses on Etsy who are doing lovely work.

This week’s Sewing Pattern Saturday pick is a charming and very usable Cat-Shaped Bag Sewing Pattern, and it’s one of those designs that manages to be playful without tipping into novelty.

First Impressions

This pattern immediately stands out for its simplicity. The finished bag clearly reads as a cat, but in a subtle, modern way. Soft curves form the body, the face is minimal and understated, and the overall shape feels calm and intentional rather than cartoonish.

What I love most is that it doesn’t feel like a “kids only” project. This is a cat-inspired tote bag you could happily take to the shops, the library, or use as an everyday carry without feeling self-conscious.

Size & Practical Use

This is a generously sized tote-style bag. There’s plenty of room for daily essentials, notebooks, craft supplies, or even a light jumper. The cat shape adds personality, but it doesn’t interfere with function, which isn’t always the case with novelty bag patterns.

Because the design is soft and unstructured, it works beautifully as a casual, grab-and-go bag.

Skill Level & Sewing Experience

This pattern is very approachable and would suit confident beginners or anyone who has already sewn a basic tote bag.

You’ll need to be comfortable with:

  • Sewing gentle curves

  • Taking your time with shaping

  • Basic bag construction

There’s no complicated hardware, no zips to wrestle with, and no fiddly steps that make the project feel overwhelming. It’s a confidence-building sew rather than a stressful one.

Instructions & Pattern Clarity

The instructions are clear, straightforward, and easy to follow. The construction process feels logical, and the bag comes together in a way that makes sense as you sew. Even if you don’t make bags often, this pattern doesn’t assume advanced knowledge.

It’s the kind of PDF sewing pattern you could happily work through over a relaxed weekend.

Fabric Choices & Customisation

Fabric choice really defines the final look of this bag. It works especially well with:

  • Linen

  • Cotton canvas

  • Mid-weight upholstery fabric

Neutral tones give it a modern, minimalist feel, but it would also be lovely in playful prints or bold colours. Because the design is simple, it’s easy to personalise with contrast stitching, embroidered whiskers, or a fun lining without losing the overall balance.

Finished Look & Gifting Potential

Once finished, this bag feels practical, sturdy, and genuinely usable. It’s not just cute for the sake of being cute. It’s the kind of handmade item you’ll actually reach for.

It would make a wonderful:

  • Handmade gift for a cat lover

  • Everyday tote bag

  • Fun but functional sewing project

  • Handmade market or gift-giving piece

Is This Sewing Pattern Worth Making?

If you enjoy easy bag sewing patterns, cat-inspired projects, or sewing items that blend function with personality, this one is a lovely choice. It’s approachable, thoughtfully designed, and results in a bag that feels both playful and practical.

This Cat-Shaped Bag Sewing Pattern fits perfectly into the spirit of Sewing Pattern Saturday: creative, well designed, and genuinely enjoyable to sew.
