Three stretch stitches for sewing on knits

January 23, 2014 by Anne Weaver

Three stretch stitches for sewing on knitsStephanie from Craftside (and who also happens to be our Recycled Crafts editor here at Craft Gossip), shows three types of stretch stitches for sewing on knits.  Most newer sewing machines will have at least one of these three stitches.  It’s an excerpt  from the book The Complete Photo Guide to Clothing Construction by Christine Haynes.  While you’re there, get entered to win a copy of the book.  Go to Craftside to read about stretch stitches.

I have never had fabulous luck sewing on knit fabrics. Here’s hoping there are solutions for my older machines! Thanks Anne!

My older machine doesn’t have any stretch stitches so I just use a basic zig zag. It’s a wider stitch than I usually like, I keep it narrow so it’s not too bulky. A 2 length, and 2 width will usually work for me. –Anne

Easy Cosmetics Bag Sewing Pattern

The bag is simple, uses very little fabric (about 2/3rds of a fat quarter), has no fussy inside pockets (although you can add your own if you like), and takes me well less than 30 minutes to print the pattern, cut out and sew. But quick and simple doesn’t mean it’s not awesome!

It’s the sort of bag that is versatile enough to be used for lots of applications, not just cosmetics and toiletries. Keep all your pens and pencils in order, use it for a small first aid kit for the car, keep it in your desk at work for a few headache pills and other personal supplies.

Make some for yourself, for gifts or to sell.
