March 28, 2009 by Anne Weaver

Homespun Threads shares a tutorial for making these kimono baby shoes.  I don’t have a little baby any more, but I’m thinking that a pair of these will be my gift at the next baby shower I attend.  Get the tutorial.

The kimono has been worn in Japan for over a thousand years, dating back to the Heian Period.

So, why is the kimono so fashionable these days? Straight fabric cuts are combined to create a garment that will fit every body type. It is easy to wear and sew.

The excellent first sewing lesson. Kimonos are usually made of lightweight fabrics. Kimono shirts are ideal for layering in the summer.

The ideal beginner sewing lesson. Kimonos are frequently composed of light materials. Looking for more patterns and ideas for making your own Kimono top? Check out all our DIY Kimono Sewing Pattern articles.

hi this is adorable thanks for sharing the pattern. I do have a question as I’m new to sewing and I’m only successful when I follow along watching youtube videos. My question is how did the end product not have any raw edges showing? At what point did you turn the material inside out? The sole never got sew together but the edges are left raw and doesn’t get turn inside out?

The raw edges get turned to the inside of the shoe. If you look closely at the big photo in the PDF, you can see the raw edges along the back of the inside of the shoe. –Anne

How do I enlarge this pattern? I made a couple of pair for a 2-month old and they were too small.
