Tutorial: Stretchy car seat cover

Kate from See Kate Sew created this stretchy cover for her baby’s car seat.  It’s made from a knit fabric so it stretches to fit snugly around the car seat. It’s open at the top so you can peek in whenever you like.  It’s quick to make (less than 30 minutes!) and uses just 1 yard of knit fabric. It can also be used as a nursing cover or as a shopping cart cover (when baby is older). There are always sooo many things we have to carry around with our babies.  Any time we can reduce that, it’s a big plus in my book.

  1. If you use the stretchy seat cover on a hot day it is as bad as leaving a dog in a car on a hot day even with a window open.

  2. Have pattern for Stretchy Car Seat cover ready to go, but having trouble with matching lines and having it come out to the right size. Would like to know cut measurements for length and height so I can line up the pages correctly. Kate says cut off 1/2 inch but that isn’t helping me. Just need to know those measurements!

    • This question is probably best asked at See Kate Sew, as she is the author or the pattern, but I’ll give it a whirl. If the pattern is not printing correctly, it could be a matter of scaling. Be sure that you have your print settings to not scale. The 1/2″ that she’s talking about is just around the edge of each page, which is standard on paper printed patterns. Home printers don’t print to the edge of the paper, so that part is always trimmed off. You should be able to see where that is by where the printed lines stop. If trimming and setting to print with no scaling doesn’t work, just match them up the best you can. Knit fabric is very forgiving, especially with small differences like you’d have with pattern lines not matching perfectly. The fabric is going to have to stretch to fit, so if you’re off by 1″ or so, it shouldn’t make much difference. Hope that helps! –Anne
